Recover from the Holiday Season with This Exhibit

Andrew Catanese attended the Sam Fox School of Art and Design at Washington University in St. Louis where he obtained a BFA in Studio Art and first began to cultivate his narrative style. He currently lives and works in Atlanta, Georgia. He has shown throughout the state as well as participated in shows in Missouri, Virginia, and Italy. Catanese’s work stems from his often isolating experiences growing up in the South.

The dense, tapestry-like images are populated with disguised figures caught in moments of violence and intimacy, surrounded by the thick, heavy foliage enveloping the South. Each painting draws heavily from Southern literature, biblical narratives, and classical myth. Catanese’s work strives to articulate a desperate call for more empathy in the human experience. The paintings endeavor to capture the complexities (both woe and wonder) of the American South.
